Bibliographie de l'artiste

Mere Phantoms is a Montreal based duo. They are artists Maya Ersan and Jaimie Robson. Drawing on traditions of shadow theatre, early cinema and papercutting, they create interactive installations and performances positioned between spectacle and experience. These works function as immersive environments that rely on audience participation and explore the possibilities of situating the audience as performer.

Démarche

Three Cities: Prayer /  Protest is a shadow installation that explores the notion of the ‘city’ as a palimpsest in which layers of social, cultural, economic, and political differences come into dialogue. As artists, Maya and Jaimie are creatively moved by the tensions that ensue when urban development interests collide. For Three Cities they draw inspiration from the cities in which they have collectively lived and worked: Vancouver, Montreal and Istanbul. For each city they have selected a specific site or event that they were personally involved with and moved by. They have selected one particular image as a focal point in each city; an image that became etched in their minds following events that they personally witnessed.
