The Oriental Dance Workshop
Rah is an Iranian- Canadian video, photo and performance artist. Rah has been the recipient of numerous awards and residencies including: Conseil Des Arts et des Lettres du Quebec Grant for Digital Arts (2014), Studio Das Weisse Haus Residency (Vienna, 2014), Artslant Georgia Fee Residency (Paris, 2014), Ottawa Art Gallery Award of Excellence (2013) SAW Video Award (2012).Her work has been published and exhibited in galleries and museums internationally and she is represented by Vtape.
The Oriental Dance Workshop is a performance done by Rah?s character Fatimeh. Fatimeh is an fun, high energy and accessible character that uses comedy to lure the participant, while confronting them and encouraging them to think critically about racial stereotypes. The participants will be taught a traditional Iranian dance. This solo dance style consists of improvisation and graceful movements, gestures and poses and each dancer approaches this style in their own unique way. While individuals are learning the dance, they are also introduced to traditional Iranian music sung by female Iranian vocalists, traditional dress and other folk dance styles.
